The Groma (derived from the Greek gnomon γνόμων, meaning 'indicator') was the principal Roman surveying instrument. This device was essential for various applications, including military, agricultural, and civic needs, and became almost synonymous with the Roman land surveyor. Civil engineers utilized the Groma not only for site measurement but also to survey land, which laid the groundwork for roads and the planning of streets and towns. The techniques developed using the Groma paved the way for impressive Roman works that still stand today, much like modern methods in 3D scanning and reverse engineering that enhance our understanding of historical structures.

Groma Studio is a leading engineering design consultancy based in Perth (WA). We specialise in high-accuracy 3D scanning and 3D modelling, as well as detailed shop drawings designed specifically for steel processing and fabrication workshops. Our expertise also includes reverse engineering and precise site measurement to ensure optimal results for our clients.

Andrea created Groma Studio in 2019. He is a Professional Mechanical Engineer and Member of Engineers Australia, with extensive experience in the steel industry. His work spans both overseas projects and the WA manufacturing industry, where he has utilized techniques such as 3D modelling, 3D scanning, and reverse engineering, along with precise site measurement.
Imagine being able to walk through your site anytime, from anywhere, without needing to visit in person. Our interactive 3D scanning technology allows you to explore the site remotely, moving from point to point as if you’re on location, while also enabling accurate site measurement. Each red dot features a 360° image captured on the day of scanning, ensuring you see exactly what was on site and don’t miss any details. With Groma Studio's expertise in 3D modelling and reverse engineering, you can see more and plan better.

We are sheet metal specialists, utilizing advanced 3D scanning techniques and 3D modelling to define the most efficient and manufacturable forming solutions for your components. Before production, we ensure that all manufacturing requirements, including site measurements, are clearly specified.
We deliver manufacturing-ready DXF flat patterns that include bend lines, bend directions, and K-factors (as required), alongside all critical cut geometry—fully optimized for CNC laser cutting and seamless fabrication workflows through our reverse engineering processes.

Using inputs from hand sketches, diagrams, 2D CAD files, general arrangement drawings, or 3D scans from reverse-engineered scans, we create precise 3D modelling in SolidWorks. With our extensive experience in steel and sheet metal fabrication, these 3D models are fully manufacturable, allowing us to produce detailed 2D shop and fabrication drawings.
Our drawings include material and steel grade specifications, dimensional tolerances, weld symbols, hole callouts, and Bills of Materials (BOM) to support accurate and efficient fabrication. We understand that time is money, which is why we deliver accurate, fabrication-ready data efficiently, ready for CNC machining, laser cutting, and assembly, all backed by thorough site measurement.

We perform high-precision 3D scanning to capture detailed spatial data, generating both accurate point clouds and 3D meshes. These deliverables are essential for 3D modelling, mechanical design, as-built documentation, CAD modeling, reverse engineering, and fabrication workflows. Our reliable data supports effective site measurement, analysis, and production planning.
